Following the teaching model of the University of Oxford, Advanced Tutorial Programme students meet weekly, for two hours – individually or in pairs – with a professor specialising in their subject of choice. Classes are usually held either in the professor’s home or at a college room in Oxford, or at Nelson House in Bath.
Tutorials are of particular relevance to those wishing to undertake senior or honours thesis work on their return home, and/or who wish to continue their studies at graduate level.

Teaching, learning and assessment
Timetable
Tutorial students meet weekly, for two hours - singly or in pairs - with a professor specialising in their subject or language of choice, following the model of Oxford University.
Credits and programme structure
Students on the ASE Advanced Tutorial Programme will usually take their tutorial course alongside three seminar courses. ASE recommends four credits for each of our courses, giving a total of 16 credits for each semester programme.
It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that their chosen programme satisfies the credit requirements of their home campus.
Assessment
Tutorial students are set regular assignments, and usually a final exam. For Creative Writing students, ongoing assignments culminate in a portfolio of work on which final assessment is principally based.
For students of classical or modern languages, assessment is continuous and derives from a series of papers and/or tests, and a final examination.
Exact assessment methods and criteria may vary according to the needs of the individual course.

Application and eligibility
How to apply
ASE’s extensive network of academic connections in Oxford, Bath and beyond, means that tutorials can be arranged in a wide variety of academic subject areas, according to the academic passions and/or specific requirements of individual students.
A successful tutorial proposal will usually include the following:
A thoughtful outline of the proposed topic of study (100-200 words)
A British / European element or component to the topic
An original example of work in the discipline for which you are applying (e.g. a sample of creative writing, an academic essay, or audition video, as required)
All proposals will be assessed by ASE’s Director of Studies in consultation with our Academic Advisor and the Dean & Director. ASE reserves the right to suggest modifications to tutorial proposals and the final decision on the viability of a proposal lies solely with ASE.
Language tutorials are not available to complete beginners.

GPA requirements
Tutorials are usually available only to students with a minimum GPA of 3.4 (3.0 for languages).
Minimum enrolment
Courses will only run if there is a viable level of enrolment. Acceptance to courses cannot be guaranteed, but every effort will be made to provide students with the courses of their choice.
