Internship: Brunel’s SS Great Britain Trust

  • Advanced Studies in England Nelson House, 2 Pierrepont Street Bath, England, BA1 1LB United Kingdom (map)

With its two museums, historic nineteenth-century dockyard and lovingly restored Victorian ship, Brunel’s SS Great Britain is now Bristol’s number one visitor attraction. We tell the incredible story of one of Britain’s greatest engineers, and one of the most important ships in maritime history.

Built in Bristol’s Dry Dock from 1839-43, the SS Great Britain was the world’s first modern ship, and the largest passenger ship in the world until 1854. Her innovative design combined three cutting edge technologies – steam power, an iron hull and a powerful propeller – reducing the journey time to cross the Atlantic, and later the world, significantly.

On board, visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in a Victorian world with hundreds of things to see, hear, touch and smell. Our knowledgeable costumed interpreters retell the story of the thousands of passengers and crew who set sail on this extraordinary ship.

This internship offers the chance to join our small, friendly Interpretation Team, helping create an engaging, authentic and surprising visitor experience. We work across the site to devise and deliver the public programme, maintain the immersive experience and collect and process visitor research - research which underpins everything we do!

Time may also be spent with other teams across the Trust, from marketing to front of house, giving the intern genuine insight into and practical experience of the work of a unique museum.
