This course will explore how culture affects our experiences, including our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. We will introduce theories and methods critical for understanding culture and diversity. Additionally, we will provide a brief history of cultural psychology and examine several psychological topics from a cultural standpoint, such as motivation, human development, and cognition. By studying these topics, students will gain a deeper understanding of the techniques utilised by cultural psychologists while also enhancing their critical thinking and analytical abilities.
A key objective will be to encourage students to think about their cultural values and norms more comprehensively. Ultimately, the course is designed to increase each student’s cultural competence, including their knowledge of different cultures and the behaviours expected, tolerated, stigmatised and criminalised in each.
